The Royal Academy of Magic
Ranks:
Accepted: You have been accepted into the school, as you have shown at least a minimum level of potential for grasping arcane forces. You will learn the very basics of magic at this level. Additionally, you will undertake training in other practical matters such as self-defense.
Apprentice: While you have progressed beyond the very basics of magic, you are still learning the foundations. You are apprenticed to someone of at least Magister rank, who will now oversee the course of your education. And then
Senior Apprentice: You have the foundations of magic quite firmly in hand, and are delving into more specialized areas of study under the supervision of your Magister.
Mage: You have mastered the foundations of sorcery as an apprentice and are familiar with at least one specialty area. You have typically proven yourself valuable to the school. This is the level to which most students aspire and most graduate and leave the school for their own pursuits once reaching this level.
Magister: You have mastered basic sorcery, at least one specialty of it and have shown an aptitude for further scholarship in the magical arts. Each Magister will have up to seven apprentices, and you are responsible for teaching those of Apprentice rank and higher. Chances are, you know some unusual tricks and have explored more than one specialty.
Adept: You are both well-versed in the subtleties of sorcery in general and well-studied in at least two specialties. Those who reach this level have spent years, even decades, at study and have delved into the mechanics of magic, as well as the philosophy and history of it throughout shadow. You can teach a Magister a few tricks, and only the most foolish of students would think to challenge you to a duel.
Royal Adept and Preceptor: While technically two offices, this is the pinacle of the school's teachers and the headmaster. One MUST be of Adept rank before aspiring to this position.
Minimum acceptance age: 14
Typical acceptance age: 15-16
Maximum acceptage age: none
If a person shows potential, but does not show adequate maturity, his admission will be deferred until the next year, at which time his application will be re-evaluated.
Minimum apprentice age: 15
Typical apprentice age: 16-17
If a person is unable to proceed to apprentice level in four years, she may graduate as a Novice of the Royal Academy for Magic. The title Novice is given as an acknowledgement of completion four years of rigorous study of a variety of disciplines of which magic would be only one. It is not given to those who do not graduate the program of scholarship.
Beyond that, the time it will take students to reach any given level is highly variable, depending upon their course of study, their magister, their own scholarship and their own affinity for magic.
Admission:
Applications will be made to the Royal Academy for Magic. They are reviewed by the Royal Adept and Preceptor as well as a committee of other instructors at the RAM. To encourage the scholarship and development of the natural talents of Deigans, applications from citizens of Deiga will be viewed given more precedence over those from other applicants. An application fee is necessary for non-citizens, as well as a letter of recommendation from someone of at least mage rank (or their equivalent). Exceptionally talented foreign applicants may request a Waiver from the Admission Committee, however, these are rarely granted.
All applicants that have passed an initial round of screening will receive a Letter of Inivitation to come the RAM for testing. Those who pass the requisite tests will be accepted and eligible to begin study. A student who passes the tests and is accepted should be prepared to live on the Academy grounds until their graduation under a strict code of conduct. For this reason, Letters of Invitation will be considered valid for one year after their issuance (in Deigan time). An extension of this Letter of Invitation may be requested in writing up to the date of expiration. After this date passes, a new application must be submitted and it will be evaluated anew.
During the period in which a student is accepted, but not apprentice, he or she will have a Mentor. This mentor will be a Senior Apprentice or Mage. The mentor will help the student with non-magical studies and preparation for the Apprenticeship Exams. These exams are given twice yearly, once in the winter and once in the summer. Once the mentor feels the student is adequately prepared to take the exam, the mentor will petition the Preceptor for permission to sit the Apprenticeship Exam. The Apprenticeship Exams may only be taken three times, so it behooves the student to take the exam when FULLY prepared. This is a large part of a mentor's job. There will be written and practical portions to this exam. Once the student passes the exam, he will work with his mentor to select a Magister, and an Application to Apprentice will be submitted to the Preceptor. Once approved, the student will become an apprentice and begin further studies under his Magister's guidance.
Similarly to the Apprenticeship Exams, an apprentice must take another set of exams to move to Senior Apprentice. These exams are called the Qualifying Exams. When you pass them, you have qualified to become a Senior Apprentice. They test the foundations of magic, in both written and practical form. The process to take these is similar to the Apprenticeship Exams.
Finally, when a student is nearing the end of her Senior Apprenticeship, a final set of exams are required. These are the Competency Exams, and they must be taken in General Magic and one specialty. The process is the same. Once these are passed, a person will graduate as a full Mage of the RAM after completing the Petition to Graduate. A student may also complete a Petition to Continue Scholarship, which will allow the student to continue in higher studies of magic.

Women in Deiga There's more tolerance for different forms of dress, etc, in Deiga than there might be elsewhere, but dressing scantily clearly marks one as a "Tourist," and a mark for scams. |
Geography Weather & climate Principle cities - Valencia, Deiga's capital city |
Monarchy The Deigan government is an absolute monarchy. All laws are made by the King, and while the King's Council advises him, and may resent the King not listening to their advice, they are merely an advisory board. While having great influence, their power is through their own positions and in their own domains, rather than in effecting laws. King's Council Comprised of all the King's Ministers plus any Advisors appointed by the King. The duty of the King's Council is to counsel him upon any matter, at his request. This council may meet at the drop of a hat. Ministries - The Minister of Vice oversees all applications for liscensing of brothels and casinos. - The Minister of Justice is usually chosen by his predecessor and approved by the King, unlike most ministers. It should, however, be noted that justice in Deiga is not blind, and much may be bought for a high enough price. - The Minister of War is usually a noble whose family has a long history of service in the Deigan navy. This nobleman must have achieved a rank of Capitan or greater in his service. - The Minister of Trade is typically of one of the noble houses who are known to be shrewd businessmen. |
Crimes in Deiga are most often tried by the Lord or Lady of the domain in which the crime was committed. The exception to this are capital crimes, which are usually tried in Valencia under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Justice. Other crimes may be capital offenses locally, but that is left to the discretion of the Lord presiding over the trial. Two crimes must be brought before the Minster of Justice and King: treason and sedition. A third and fourth, murder and rape, may be brought before the Minister of Justice under the right conditions. Capital crimes Treason Sedition Murder Rape |
Prostitution Gambling Bribery Want to open a brothel? Apply, and slip the Minister of Vice a hefty bribe to ensure the quick processing of your application. Naturally, those with higher social standing need to bribe a bit less than those with lower. Applications have a way of getting lost without the appropriate gift attached. Want to open a business? Talk to the Minster of Trade, and bring a generous gift. Want your son to move up in the Deigan Navy? Send gifts to the Minister of War, and it might happen. It might not, but the chances are greater that your son will be noticed, this way. Of course, if your son is noticed and is entirely useless, chances are, he'll be discharged. Gifts, however, are not returned, so it is wise to be certain that your child is worth notice. Want a robbery to be overlooked? You might try sharing your profits with the Lord or Lady trying you, but this can backfire hideously, depending on who was robbed. Want a murder to be overlooked? Money might talk, in this case. Treason and sedition are more difficult to bribe one's way around given the Monarch's say in these matters, but it's still possible. Tax collectors and Ministry officials usually live beyond their salaries' means. |

Done:
Black Rose Inn, common room and upstairs. Upstairs set abode if people want to link
Terrace at villa, needs backlinked to courtyard
Talked to Raven about trade embassy. Have some reservations, as he wanted to buy an inn and circumvent official channels. Will keep eyes open.
Raven gave Deiga a pair of young, 'trainable' manticores. Just what does a Princess do with a manticore, anyway? ;)
1. Lhelp about places to stay in Deiga? It's meant to be a sort of resort-y place where people go to get away from home in Amber and the GC.
2. Build posh resort-y place and beach (2-3 rooms?)
3. Build countryside/mountains?? (2-3 rooms)
4. Climate notes for Lhelp, per RP with Benedict today: Rains ~3 months of the year. Rain + storms. Only snows in the mountains.
5. Desc library in villa
6. Build palace garden before party! Use places.
Gabe, you going to build Montoya? If so, we can do it off the mountain room or even the Camino Verde.

In a ceremony full of solemnity and ancient ritual, Lisandro of Deiga aceded the throne, taking on the mantle of Fleet Admiral of the Deigan Navy as well. His oath included promises to govern his people justly according to the laws of the nation and righteousness. The beginning of Lisandro's reign was celebrated in an intimate feast with family, Deigan nobility and visiting nobles from nearby nations.
At the feast, Lisandro announced passage of his Duchy to his eldest and only son of his first marriage, Gabriel, that it might remain in hands that can properly tend to it, and affirmed that his son Matteo would remain his Heir. Princess Hazel was named Secretary and Advisor to His Majesty, much to the surprise of many of his nobles, and perhaps even to the Princess, herself.
Afterward, His Majesty announced a week-long festival that will culminate in a Royal Ball at the palace gardens, taking advantage of the late summer weather. Since this announcement was made, invitations to the Ball have been sent to Deigan nobles and many of the nobles of surrounding Golden Circle shadows, as well as to nobles and royalty of Amber. As for those not explicitly invited, rumor has it that even though the celebration throughout Valencia will be even better than the stuffy formal event, invitations won't likely be checked thoroughly, and those dressed to impress will be admitted in spite of the predicted high security.
OOC: Any and all are welcome. Dress to impress, IC, or party on the boardwalk. Deiga is an 8-hour boat ride from Amber. The Royal Ball will begin at 7 PM EDT in the Palace Gardens. Questions to Hazel!
